Water Pumps
Water pumps have been around for many years. Moving water
from one place to another is the primary goal of irrigation, without
advanced irrigation much of our society today would not be. During the
sixth century in China chain pumps were used to move water from lower
elevations to higher elevations.
Manually operated water pumps such as hand pumps were
used to draw water from wells on demand. Water wheels were also commonly
used to pump water, many of them large enough to supply the whole village
with water. Even without electricity water pumps were very common.
Today most water pumps are powered by gas or electricity.
Gas or electric pumps can produce more force or pressure than manual
or hydraulic pumps. Some of the electrical pumps get their energy from
the sun. These solar powered pumps are the best for the environment.
